Humans will contract malaria upon the bite of an infected mosquito that is carrying one of the 4 Plasmodium protozoan parasites. The disease is considered the leading cause of morbidity, mortality and socioeconomic impediment in the Northern African continent. The advances in malaria treatment in Sub Saharan Africa focus on grant schemes in the delivery of safe and effective anti-malarials.

Research has indicated that approximately 1 million people die annually as a result of this disease. The rapid rise in death toll has been attributed to the rise in resistance to antimalarial drugs. Approaches to effective treatments include an integrated control strategy backed by funding and environmental management.

The objectives for increased control over this disease are in developing clinical interventions in overcoming resistance to antimalarial drugs. Many adults develop immunity to the disease as result of gradual exposure. Children, people with HIV and AIDS and pregnant women are at increased risk for becoming infected.

Symptoms are categorized as headaches, chills, fever, and vomiting which could increase in severity within a 24-hour period. A popular and effective method for controlling transmission is through the use of cost effective insecticide treated nets which are slept under at night and spraying indoor areas with an insecticide. Strategies are geared toward developing vaccines through clinical trials.

Interventions for treating this epidemic include the development of effective antimalarial drugs and improved public health infrastructure. The medicines for treating the disease must be made available to all citizens as poorer communities are unable to afford the costs associated with the necessary drugs. Recently the medicine, Artemisinin has been introduced to prevent the occurrence of drug resistance.

The malaria treatment in Sub Saharan Africa requires an integrated approach to intervention. Increased funding is needed in order to make the necessary drugs and preventative measures available to all individuals. Strategies geared toward economic, environmental, and social aspects aim to increase access to medication and eradicate the transmission of this disease.
